Hi ,
According to your question "How can I generate a table of PBI ID and Title without the description, etc.?" I think your query type is tree or direct link type and therefore it is not rendering the data accordign to your smartpart.
What you can try is create the SmartPart as Form and then run the query and if you have other work items in that query too then they shall appear with desc but not the PBI.
After that if you problem still persist then I can do a brief GoToMeeting session with you where I shall investigate your issue and try to resolve it too.
