Custom ID is a background service and user has to define criteria for custom id in an xml configuration file ( for further details regarding location and details of confioguration file, Refer to attached Custom ID Technote). Once Custom ID is configured as per the required format, it will be visible on all work item's defined filed(configurable) in TFS/ Azure DevOps.
Let's take an example, consider below is the requirement from user to configure Custom IDs for defined work item types. As it seems to be customized work items they must all have designated custom id field too in their properties.
For the above scenario, Custom ID configuration file will be configured as shown in attachment "CustomID config example".
After succesful configuration of Custom ID for above scenario, on TFS/ Azure DevOps Custom ID for configured work items would be displayed as shown in attachment "Custom ID output ".
